Share-Net member advocating at UN meeting of the Commission on Population and Development

WPF, a member of Share-Net, is currently at the UN Commission on Population and Development meeting in New York, to advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The Commission monitors the implementation of the ICPD Cairo Agenda and its annual meeting is an important momentum to get governments committed to SRHR, maternal mortality, gender equality and young people's SRHR.

This year's theme is "Health, morbidity, mortality and development". Currently, government delegations are negotiating a draft resolution on this theme. Representatives of NGOs that are friendly towards SRHR have gathered and are implementing strategies to get governments to push for a progressive resolution that reflects the agreed goals of the ICPD and the Millennium Development Goals. The delegation of the Netherlands is negotiating as part of the EU group.

We are expecting quite some tough debates around issues like (un)safe abortion, sexual rights, young people's SRHR, prevention. The NGO group is ready to support friendly delegations where needed and are preparing ourselves for long hours of lobbying. WPF will post regular updates about the progress during the week.
